Bulgarian, German Ladies Slightly Injured in Varna Airport Accident
Two elderly women – a Bulgarian and a German – have been slightly injured as a plane unexpectedly left the runway of the airport in Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Varna. The casualties have been identified, they are aged 71 and 81 respectively. They have broken limbs and are currently treated in a local hospital. The accident took place at 10:19 am EET on Friday. Petroceltic Abandons Bulgarian Black Sea Well
Dublin-based oil and gas explorer Petroceltic International is to abandon an exploration well off the Bulgarian coast that failed to yield enough gas to justify commercial production. The Kamchia-1 exploration well, part of the Galata exploration concession, reached a total depth of 2,887 feet and encountered 56 feet of carbonate sands with sub-commercial gas saturations, the company said. Shelves with free books will be placed inside four Sofia subway stations on May 24 when the country celebrates the Day of Slavic Script and Bulgarian Culture. The initiative “Books in the Subway” belongs to the civic association “Politronik” and the municipal “Metropolitan” company. Basescu OKs Bulgaria-Romania Danube Bridge II Joint Venture
Romanian President Traian Basescu has signed into law the ratification of the agreement between Romania and Bulgaria to establish a joint venture for the exploitation of Danube Bridge II. According to Romanian media, cited by the Bulgarian Focus news agency, Basescu has signed the document on Wednesday. The joint venture will collect the tolls and other fees for using the bridge, which will connect Bulgaria‘s Vidin and Romania‘s Calafat. The company will provide about 50 jobs for the fiscal management of the bridge, technical maintenance and control, and administration. Expats Remain Biggest ‘Foreign’ Investor in Bulgaria
Emigrants‘ remittances to Bulgaria continue to grow and amounted to EUR 73.7 M in March 2013, according to data of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB). The amount is larger than the direct foreign investments in the country, which totaled EUR 49.2 M in March. The expats remittances show a 15% increase for that month, making the highest amount since the beginning of the year. From January to March 2013, the emigrants have wired a total of EUR 196.5 M to Bulgaria.
